Super Mario Bros.: Castle in the Sky and Castle in the Sky Co-Op (SMB1 hack) Nintendo Entertainment System

Castle in the Sky:
Journey through the mysterious world of Laputa in this hack and help Pazu to rescue Sheeta and the pirates from the evil hands of Muska. Based on the incredible animated movie, Castle in the Sky, this hack takes place entirely on the floating castle itself. You can run through the castle gardens, its walls, its massive forest, and the weaponized underbelly itself to defeat all of Muska's minions and save your friends. Almost every graphic has been changed to fit the Castle in the Sky aesthetic and incorporate its wide array of varied enemies. The world is counting on you, Pazu!

Custom Box art can be found here (for NES classic users and people who like visual distinction): https://imgur.com/gallery/YzyE7ns

Changelog:

Version 1.2:
- Fixed Castle Enemies' Palettes (fixed them all to match overworld palettes)
- Fixed Castle Pipe Palettes (fixed them to match overworld palettes)
- Fixed Title Screen Selection Icon (mushroom) to Sheeta's Necklace

Version 1.1:
- Fixed Soldier Sprite to reflect yellow clothing of original art
- Fixed Clouds in Bonus Level to match the aesthetic of the rest of the changes

Version 1.0 - Finished all sprite edits and replaced most graphics

Castle in the Sky Co-Op:
This version of the Castle in the Sky hack allows for simultaneous multiplayer, where a friend can join in on the action along with Pazu! (Based on Corpse Grinder's original hack http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4180/.)

Version 1.0 - Ported Everything Over From Original Hack
(V1.0 of Co-Op hack is comparable with V1.2 of the original hack)

Known Limitations and Bugs:
- The Title Screen is "squished together" due to Supergamerguy's unfamiliarity with the Co-Op hack's code rearrangements, though he had previously been able to get everything the same as the original Castle in the Sky hack, except for the top right hand corner and the right side of the "Title box".

- In the original Co-Op hack by Corpse Grinder, Luigi's pallettes was edited to be tied to the pallette of the enemies, which holds true for this hack (since Supergamerguy's coding skills are almost nonexistent), so sadly, Patwo will not be colored like he was in the original Castle in the Sky hack, and is tied to the enemies' pallettes instead.

- Some of the enemies in their overworld states (namely Buzzy Beetles and Bullet Bills), are also tied to the Goomba's pallette, so they are now colored differently than the original Castle in the Sky hack.

If anybody with more SMB knowledge or better coding skills would like to fix these problems,
PLEASE feel free to do so! You can either send Supergamerguy the "update" through RHDN's Forum PM's
(and be assured that Supergamerguy will give proper crediting) or upload your own version on RHDN
(but please credit Supergamerguy as the original hacker).

Background Info:
- I remember the first time I watched Castle in the Sky. Spirited Away had
been previously checked out from the local library for me when I was around
7 years old and I had immediately been sucked into the wonderful world of
Ghibli films. My next Ghibli film, Castle in the Sky, was checked out just a few weeks later
and was integral in shaping my love of movies and my appreciation of the
sci-fi/fantasy genre as I would grow older.

But throughout my youth, I yearned for more Ghibli, and after I had watched all of Miyasaki's films and most
of the other works from Studio Ghibli and set up a biannual binge marathon of
Ghilbi movies, I began to look elsewhere for Ghibli content. I couldn't find
any official Ghibli games, and little to no fan creations online for me to enjoy.

So I decided to make my own! As Castle in the Sky slowly began to rise to the
top as my favorite movie of all time, I began to make some basic pixel art
of Castle in the Sky characters (based on Super Mario Bros. 1 sprites) that
would become my inspiration for a ROMHACK several years later.

I thought that Super Mario Bros. 1 would be perfect for my fan tribute and,
after 30 hours of sprite editing using various tools and programs, my once
pipe-dream had now become a reality! I hope you all enjoy the fruits of my
labor and have as much fun playing it as I had fun making it!

NOTE: This is my first ROMHACK and one of my first sprite editing/creating
projects, so I'm sure it's not perfect (I didn't edit any hitboxes so the
sprites and the hitboxes might be a bit out of line).

Tools Used (Castle in the Sky):
- FCEUX (NES emulator - used to test game)
- Tile Layer Pro (used to edit most of the sprites and sprite layouts)
- S.M.B. Remodeler (used to edit color palletes and some color assignments)
- SMB NES ROM Text Editor (used to edit the text in the game)
- SMB Title Editor (used to edit the letter graphics and make a new
title screen that matches the hack name)
- SMB Graphics Workshop (used to locate some graphical tiles and quick check
some sprites)

Tools Used (Castle in the Sky Co-Op):
- FCEUX (NES emulator - used to test game, edit color pallettes, edit text, and edit the
Title Screen)
- Tile Layer Pro (used to edit most of the sprites and sprite layouts)

Explanations of changes:

Here's some clarifications of which characters, obstacles, and enemies are
changed and what they currently represent.

NOTE: The entire game is set on and within Laputa. The overworld stages take
place in the garden and on the walls of Laputa, the underground stages take
place within the walls of Laputa, the sky and treetop stages take place in
the forest area of Laputa, and the castle stages take place in the weaponized
and royal underbelly parts of Laputa.

Character Changes:
- Mario: Pazu (based on his normal appearance and working within the limits
of an NES color pallete)
- Luigi: "Patwo" (a character created for this hack that's just a pormanteau
of "Pazu" and "Player Two")
- Peach: Sheeta (with the short hair she has at the end of the movie after
killing Muska)
- Bowser: Muska (his firebreath has been changed to bullets)
- Toad: Dola (in her captain's outfit with hat and one-suit)

Enemy Changes:
- Goomba: a Robot Head (with skinny wires for "legs and feet")
- Koopa: a Fox Squirrel (taking refuge inside a hollowed-out Robot head)
- Piranha Plant: a Robot (upper half)
- Lakitu: Muska's Henchmen (holding onto one of the scientific "knowledge"
blocks from the royal/weaponized underbelly of Laputa)
- Hammer Bros.: Soldiers (throwing stick grenades)
- Cheep Cheep: Sunken City Fish (from the underwater section of Laputa)
- Blooper: Mice-like creatures (the ones that scurry off from Pazu and Sheeta
and into the water; the fuzzy ones with four eyes and thick tails)
- Bullet Bill: Hibernating Robots (the ones that stay curled up in the tubes
of the underbelly of Laputa and get launched out and to attack "The Goliath")
- Buzzy Beetle: Mice-like creatures ("")
- Spiny: Golden Dragon Head (when curled up, it is a treasure bracelet; when
walking on the ground, it resembles one of the large treasure pieces that the
soldiers loot from Laputa)

Item and Obstacle Changes:
- Mushroom: Red Apple (made to match Green Apple)
- 1-Up Mushroom: Green Apple (based off the apple that Pazu and Sheeta share
underground in the abandoned mining caves: "and a green apple for dessert!")
- Fire-Flower: Trumpet (and Pazu gains the ability to shoot out musical notes)
- Star: Big Etherium Crystal (the one that powers Laputa and keeps it afloat)
- Axe: Etherium Necklace (Sheeta's Necklace)
- ? Block: Treasure Chest
- Pipes: Pillars (covered in vinegrowth)
- Lava: Light from Laputa's atomic blasts
- Lava Ball: Ball of Energy
- Fences: Arched Walls
- Trees (background): Broken Columns
- Bridges: Stone Walkways (that hold up the aging walls of Laputa)
- Vine: Roots
- Tree (platforms): Large Trees (with more branches and leaves)
- Moving (Steel Beam) Platforms: Tree Branches
- Coral: Tree Roots
- Spring: Tree Stump
- Pulleys and Ropes (that hold up the "Steel Beams"): Flowered Vines
- Title Screen Selection Icon (mushroom): Etherium Necklace (Sheeta's Necklace)
