Super Mario Bros. 3: Luigi's Chronicles 2 Nintendo Entertainment System

This is a complete, 5-world SMB3 hack originally started by Googie and majorly completed by Quick Curly. It is the sequel for Luigi's Chronicles, a Super Mario Bros. hack.

There is more than one possible path to take; it is up to you to decide where Luigi goes and how he gets there. Of course, some paths are more difficult and a few may even be more hidden than others, so it will by no means be a walk in the park! This hack is intended to be difficult, so you have been warned! Persistence is the key... or is that a Whistle?

Among the changes in this hack, many levels have been spread out among longer worlds compared to those in the original game. Pay close attention to your time limit in each level as well; some ventures are based on speed and others depend on endurance! Overall, however, this daring journey aims to be a fast-paced adventure that could result in a beaten down keyboard, controller and/or brain!

To really get a feel for this hack, you'll have to try it for yourself! Please check out the readme first for more information as well!

LUIGI'S CHRONICLES 2
SMB3 Hack by Googie & Quick Curly
2007-2010
--------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:

Googie is the original author of this SMB3 hack, starting it
back in 2007. Quick Curly joined the project in late 2008 and
started working on it sometime in 2009 while taking a break
from Quick Bros. 2. Googie had already finished World 1 and
other things, mainly the Luigi graphics thanks to Lags_80. QC
was originally only going to do Worlds 2, 4, 6 and 8, but once
he finished those Worlds he offered to finish the other Worlds
as well.

His focus was mainly on the level editing, but he edited some
graphics here and there. While not everything else was edited
extensively, he released the hack after quite some time to
pursue other projects, and therefore the hack should be viewed
as complete as it is going to get. To note, he had plans to
edit the music, and originally had a decent "Midna's Lament"
added in, but in the end felt that music editing would be best
saved for another time and place.

Among the changes in this hack, Quick implemented a simple
ASM hack that allows any amount of time divisible by 100 "SMB3
seconds" (up to 900) and makes music such as the Bowser Battle
and N-Spade Bonus available in regular levels via the standard
level header.

A little bit of ASM was also necessary so that tile animation
for BOTH Worlds 4 and 5 is disabled (instead of just World 5).

There are 5 Worlds, but don't be fooled. All of the original
SMB3 levels have been edited in some shape or form, as well as
additional levels made possible by remaining space from other
levels and/or free space in certain Object Set ROM banks. This
means that you can expect the later worlds to be LONGER than
in the original SMB3!

The palettes, text, and end credits have also been edited!
HOORAY!!! :D

Lastly - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! More than likely, you may find
this hack to be difficult! Any complaints concerning such will
be looked down upon and disregarded.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Story:

When Luigi made it all the way to the end 'a the castle, he
found a door (the end of LC Game B). He knew he was in for a
rough ride; like conquering his greatest fear of ghosts wasn't
enough. But Luigi wasn't afraid to see what he was gonna go
through in order to save Peach since Mario is still nowhere to
be found. Now, it's time to show Bowser that Luigi is on the
trail. However, Bowser has tricks and jokes up his sleeve,
along with his kids. They all need a butt kickin' anyways, so
Luigi (you as the player) handle your business...

Quick Curly and party cannot be held liable for any anger,
bitterness, sadness, insanity, burning buildings, blindness,
flaming, itchiness, destruction and/or self-destruction of
personal property, self-inflicted injuries, mutations, time

endeavours, abandonment on the moon, ninja assaults, evil
puppy bomb squads, mosh pits or the like as a result of
playing this SMB3 hack.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Errors:

Despite all the effort that Quick put into this hack, there's
still a considerably fair chance that he missed something due
to the mental state of mind he unwillingly fell victim to near
the end. If you encounter a major error, please feel free to
contact him. However, again, any issues you may have with the
graphics will more than likely be disregarded. In addition,
please refer to "Disclaimer".

--------------------------------------------------------------
Googie Thanks:

Quick Curly - For motivating me to get into the scene when I'd
lost interest and wanting to get down with LC2; us
ROM hackers gotta stick together... >:D

The Haters - Yeah, you know who you are. It was the hate for
Luigi's Chronicles that made me think of making a
sequel.

The Fans - For helping me use that hate from the haters to get
into making a sequel for Luigi.

The YouTube Crew - For subscribing to my channel and giving me
feedback on my hack videos.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Curly Thanks:

Googie - For letting me join this project and for all of the
help and support back when I was just starting to ROM
hack. I learned/taught myself much more than what I
knew back when I made Quick Bros. and I've since had
a low opinion of that hack. I wanted the opportunity
to apply this new knowledge to make up for that hack,
and I had a lot of fun working on this hack. I hope
that everyone who plays this hack enjoys it as well.

All of my subscribers and friends on YouTube - For all of the
support. Special thanks to:

- Blazzerdragon - For being a super-duper great YouTube
friend and for providing exciting videos on both
the previous and current accounts. This guy played
through Quick Bros. twice - once on each account!
- cuberootinbinary - For being one of my best YouTube
friends, and for making videos of the original
Quick Bros. which included a great positive review
that I probably didn't truly deserve at the time.
- JMFSpike - For being another one of my best YouTube
friends, as well as for all of the continuous
support and interest in my videos and projects no
matter what they might be.
- metalchains48 - Another really great YouTube friend
who also made videos of Quick Bros. and has been
very supportive of me as well. Unfortunately, his
original account is inaccessible now, so please
check out his new account, GoombaParaKoopa.

Board 2 and Romhacking.net - For giving us all a common place
to go to do stuff and whatnot.

Intruder X - For the music and everything else!

FAQ (From Quick Curly):

Q: How do I play the hack anyway?
A: You'll need the IPS patch for this hack, Lunar IPS, and the
"Super Mario Bros. 3 (U) (PRG1) [!]" ROM. First, make a
copy of your SMB3 ROM so that you can keep the original
unmodified. Rename it so that you'll be able to tell what
it is later. For example, "Luigi's Chronicles 2 (SMB3
Hack)" or something simple like that. Next, run Lunar IPS
and select "Apply IPS Patch". Locate the IPS patch for
this hack and select it first, and then select the copy of
the SMB3 ROM that you created.

Now that you have the hack in ROM form, you can load it in
your favourite NES emulator to play it! I have a personal
preference for Nestopia, although hopefully there shouldn't
be any problems playing it in whichever emulator you may be
using.

Q: Why is the hack so ridiculously hard?!
A: Well it's never my intention to make extremely difficult
levels. However, my target audience for any hack is always
players of the original game of the hack in question, so I
do try to make it somewhat difficult so that someone who
has played the original game is presented with a new
challenge. On top of that, I want to give myself a new
challenge as well, and I literally played SMB3 every single
weekend growing up, so to make SMB3 harder for myself is a
difficult task by itself (unless the creator in question is
cuberootinbinary, but that's another story for another
time). So when creating levels, sometimes I don't realize
just how challenging they might be, though if the player is
truly dedicated enough, any challenge can be conquered. As
I always say, it's not like everyone beat the original SMB3
on their first try. Practice makes perfect, so yeah, don't
expect to necessarily beat Luigi's Chronicles 2 in one try,
and I sincerely hope that you don't have to resort to save-
states.

Q: Are you ever going to update Luigi's Chronicles 2?
A: No. I really do just want to be free to work on something
new for a change.

Q: Not even an "easy edition"?
A: I honestly don't think that'll be necessary. As previously
mentioned, this hack was created to provide a challenge to
regular SMB3 players. Whether the hack will actually be
that difficult is yet to be seen...

Q: Any surprises in this hack?
A: Well I can't exactly answer that without ruining them now,
can I?! ;) However, I'll mention that I tried to add some
replay value to the hack, and playing every single level
isn't necessary. However, you're more likely to miss any
possible surprises if you don't!

Q: Any shout-outs like in Quick Bros.?
A: Yes, but they are more obscure this time. You'll see...

Q: Why does Luigi squat in the fortress?
A: He's taking a bathroom break.

Q: Why do you always thank so many people?
A: I'm a very thankful person.

Q: Will you teach me how to [insert random thing here]?
A: I like to help out with whatever I can, so if you believe I
can somehow help out, feel free to contact me. However, be
as descriptive as possible with your question(s)/problem(s)
please. In addition, if I'm too busy, please understand
that, and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Q: Do you [still] have your SMB3 notes from working on Luigi's
Chronicles 2?
A: Contact me about which specific notes you're looking for.

Q: Do you think you might still want to do more collaborative
projects? If so, can we possibly do something?
A: I have a couple other minor projects to wrap up first; a
short SMB3 hack with Gamers110 and Static S called "SMB110"
for one. Feel free to ask, but after past experiences, I've
ultimately decided that I'm only going to work with people
who I can A) trust and B) depend on to put forth an equal
effort.

I want to resume Quick Bros. 2 again, but I guess only time
will tell whether or not things play out as planned.

Q: Can I beta test one of your future hacks?
A: Please contact me if you're interested, but since I already
have people asking me as I'm typing this, please don't be
offended if I decline to keep the number of beta testers at
a manageable amount.

Q: I'm planning to do an LP of the hack. Would you want to be
a special guest in any of the videos (i.e. through Skype
and/or streaming)?
A: Provided I have the free time and am feeling up to it, I'd
be honoured to! Please contact me to share any specific
details and/or appropriate information! I'd be interested
to hear from you anyway so that I'll be able to watch your
videos as they're made available! :)
