PLEASE see the accompanying Readme in the .zip file for specific details.
This is the original Refined Gold. For the Overhaul, please see https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7752/. Both are standalone hacks, but Refined Gold is closer to vanilla while Overhaul has a new level curve.

EDIT 10/24/2022: THIS IS NOW VERSION 3.2.1!

This was based on the 4787 version of the Heartgold ROM. DSPRE and Pokeditor v2 were used for scripting and editing.

This is a standalone patch meant to enhance and improve Pokémon Heartgold while keeping the original feel. Instead of being a complete reworking of the game, this is essentially "Vanilla Heartgold+", with versions exclusives fixed, trade evolutions rectified, evolution items and berries both renewable, and alternatives provided for the more luck-based encounters. A good-sized amount of dialogue has been changed, as well as a handful of NPCs being added to explain some of the more obscure mechanics, not to mention superbosses to test your mettle. The core plot is identical to vanilla Heartgold. If you want to go back to Heartgold, whether to revisit memories or make new ones, this mod is meant to help make them a little more vivid.

Features include:
*Golden Corrals - All Pokémon are now consistently available, with Johto encounters strictly being from the Johto Dex. All evolutions that require an additional game, including both trade evolutions and Probopass, Glaceon, etc. can now be done without any such requirements.
*Indigo Tales - All legendaries and mythicals can now be fought through regular gameplay. Similarly, the Celebi and Spiky-Eared Pichu events have been restored.
*Worth its Weight - An overwhelming amount of wild Pokémon now hold held items.
*A Silver Tongue - The core plot is identical, but a sizable amount of dialogue has been changed to make NPCs and bookshelves more interesting.
*Bullion Market - All TMs, evo items and berries are now renewable and buyable from Olivine and Vermillion after beating Lance.
*Gold Standard - Movepools have been slightly altered to allow easier access to certain egg moves and the like. However, all movepools are legal in Generation 4.
v2.0
*Executive Order - SUPERBOSSES HAVE BEEN ADDED! Meet up with Eusine, be roasted by Archer, watch Mr. Game flip the table. Post-Blue challenges have been added.
*National Parks and Rehabilitation - Encounters have been redone again, and many features have been rebalanced.
*Time Enough - HP bars update up to 2x as fast. Purely aesthetic, but good QoL.
v3.0
*Overhaul Part 1 - The Great Band-Aid revises all major fights and improves the lategame level curve. ALL Kanto gyms have been remastered. This is the first stage of the planned overhaul, and still greatly resembles HG's original...quirks.
*Rocky Road - Additional evolution stones and TMs can now be found in Johto and Kanto. Magmarizer, Razor Claw, and other such items are still Kanto-exclusive.

Refined Gold patch for Pokemon Heartgold
By Refined Platinum

For the record, this is only associated with Refined Gold, Refined Platinum, and not-yet-released Gen 5 patches.
Absolutely NO connection to Refined Crystal or anything.

====RELEASES====
v3.2 Slug It Off
*After substantial demand and the discovery that Mt. Mortar is actually an extinct volcano (Steven has pitchstone from it), Slugma have been shooed into Johto.
*Minor encounter changes concerning Houndour.
*Rock Smash encounter rates are now more appropriate.
v3.1
*Mild encounter changes to improve access to select Pokemon such as Electabuzz, Houndour, and Swinub.
**Most water encounters corrected but Good Rod and Super Rod encounter %s may be inaccurate.
*Hall of Fame now mentions version number.
*Cerulean Cave now has the correct Rock Smash encounters.
*Minor improvements to certain scripts.
v3.0.4
*Various bugfixes:
**Bonita in Viridian Gym now has his proper team.
**Odd NPC behavior in Dark Cave and Route 27 has been rectified.
**Fixed softlocks including Union Cave and when losing to legendary battles.
*Time-dependent weather has been rolled back heavily to avoid softlocks.
*Did some earlygame rebalancing.
*Clair now has a Nidoqueen and Bruno has a Rhydon.
v3.0 - Epitasis of Ira
*"The Great Band-Aid"; all major fights have been somewhat tweaked, as has the path to Lance and all of Blackthorn Gym. It should be much easier to handle Lance now than before, and battles like Chuck should be more satisfying. This is a smaller rebalancing change before the full-scale overhaul of the game in a later update (which won't happen for a while).
**Blaine's Gym has been completely redone.
*Superbosses have been properly introduced, with better IV/Nature combos and Abilities.
**Elder Li is now available as a superboss.
**Superboss Archer now calls Sun; all weather superbosses have smoother transitions.
*Aforementioned brass whispers have been given better-informed opinions on their mumblings.
*Pewter Museum's exhibits have been revised, on top of the substantial v2.0 edits.
**Additional flavor text has been added to various areas, such as Mr. Pokemon's house.
*Formerly Pokewalker-exclusive Heat, Smooth, Icy and Damp Rocks have been added to Kanto.
**Lava Cookies, Old Gateau and Dive Balls are now sold by the Mahogany Souvenir Shop. Repeat, Luxury and Timer Balls are sold in Celadon Department Store.
*Evolution items have been taken off of most wild Pokemon, as they can be bought in Kanto. This prevents a small % of players inadvertently sweeping through the game.
*Additional evolution stones can now be found in Johto and Kanto. Magmarizer, Dawn, and other such items are still Kanto-exclusive. See section 5aX
*Time-dependent weather has been added to select areas. See section 6h.
*Modest tweaks to encounter rates.

v2.1
*Significant amounts of movepool changes, notably including Chikorita and Cyndaquil.
*Judge now gives better analysis of IVs.
v2.0 - Prelude to Superbia
*Superbosses have been added as Post-Blue challenges. They act as another stepping stone between Blue and Red. Like the second wave of legends, they will fight you only after you've gotten the Rock Climb HM from Professor Oak.
**Fights are meant for mid-late 70s teams.
**Eusine is now available as a superboss.
**Archer is now available as a superboss.
**Proton is now available as a superboss.
**Mr. Game is now available as a superboss.
*Eusine now has a Qwilfish at Cianwood and Proton has a Sneasel at the Radio Tower to fit their new styles better.
*Johto Gym Leaders have been buffed somewhat; their Gyms have not.
*There is now a Evolution Item and Berry market in Vermillion City.
*HP drop speed is now up to 2x faster against high-HP foes. This is purely aesthetic.
*Brass whispers and tin mutterings of lore can be heard around Whirl Islands and Ecruteak; no gameplay changes in this regard.
*Encounters have been revamped again to ensure Pokemon like Yanma feel uncommon without running off of 2% chances. All Pokemon have at least a 4% chance of appearing in some area, up from 1% for certain Pokemon. Also, starters are now found in post-Ecruteak areas.

v1.0 - First Release
*All Pokemon, period, are freely available. All non-legendaries are in the wild, with legendaries having static encounters.
*Movepools have been changed somewhat, mostly for legendary fights.
*An overwhelming amount more Pokemon now hold held items.
*Late Johto and Kanto level curve adjusted somewhat; trainers have not been touched but are still on par with or stronger than the wild Pokemon.

1a APPLYING
To apply this patch, just get your CLEAN UNEDITED COPY OF Pokemon Heartgold, the NON Xenophobia edition, and then pull out Delta Patcher and apply the patch. If it isn't Xenophobia, it should work.

Hex edits and cheat codes may not be fully compatible with this patch. PkHex is fully compatible.

To check if the patch was applied correctly, look in the Cherrygrove Town PC. A Painter NPC will be present.

1b ABOUT
**THIS IS A 493 PATCH, MEANING ALL POKEMON INCLUDING LEGENDARIES AND MYTHICALS ARE AVAILABLE**

This is a standalone patch meant to enhance and improve Pokemon Heartgold while keeping the original feel. Instead of being a complete reworking of the game, this is essentially "Vanilla Heartgold+", with versions exclusives fixed, trade evolutions rectified, evolution items and berries both renewable, and alternatives provided for the more luck-based encounters. A good-sized amount of dialogue has been changed, as well as a handful of NPCs being added to explain some of the more obscure mechanics. The core plot is identical to vanilla Heartgold. If you want to go back to Heartgold, whether to revisit memories or make new ones, this mod is meant to help make them a little more vivid.

JOHTO ITSELF HAS NOT BEEN SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGED, with the main difference being version exclusives appearing, slight buffs to late-Johto areas, and certain Pokemon restricted to the Safari Zone now being more wildly available (like Murkrow appearing on certain midgame routes at night). Most new Pokemon added are either through Kanto or the radio.

Legendaries are also scattered across the map as NPCs, with most willing to fight you after you've beaten Lance or Blue.

Kanto now has a wild level curve meant to go from level 36 (post-Victory Road) to level 48, improving ease of level grinding and making it into a postgame instead of a place to run around and breeze past Pokemon. This is a big departure from vanillam but because Kanto's wild Pokemon feel bland in vanilla in both difficulty and variety, this is an acceptable cost. Similarly, late Johto areas are now a few levels higher so it's more of a curve instead of a plateau.
As of v2.2, light changes have been applied specifically to the post-Radio segment and improving all major fights, but the main overhaul has not been implemented yet.
All 1% chances (Yanma, Marill, etc) have been increased to 4% minimum where possible.

Every TM, berry, and evolution item has been made renewable. TMs are sold in the Good Rod Angler's house in Olivine once you beat Lance, while additional evolution items and berries can be bought in Vermillion with 10 badges.
Johto itself has a very poor power curve, so I have taken the liberty of adding in certain evolution items and select TMs to improve the player's tool access. Normally, you would HAVE access to, say, a Leaf Stone but only by farming phone calls with Gina; now you can find one post-Surf in Cherrygrove. From the Gen 4 evolution items, only 1 Shiny Stone and 1 Dusk Stone have been added.

As of 2.0, HP counters fall up to 2x faster. This is purely aesthetic outside of the time it takes for HP to drain. Gen 4 is famous for its HP counter falling incredibly slow in this generation, as it never increases in speed to make up for higher HP foes. So, this hack inherently has 2x HP drain speed in effect. 3x felt too fast midgame.
This shouldn't matter much earlygame, but by the lategame it is highly beneficial, especially with the superbosses.
I cannot confirm the edited ROM is still compatible with additional edits to the speed, and am not responsible if doing so breaks your game. But, if the appropriate change is made to the relevant overlay, it should be fine. Remember to make backups and be safe.
Credit to Nitram for the specific method used.

2b Movepool Changes
**PLEASE SEE ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENT FOR DETAILS**
Modest changes. These should have a moderate impact on your playthrough, instead just letting you fine tune some builds without having to get a new Pokemon. All of these are moves the Pokemon can legally know in this generation (as of HGSS), only changed to make it less problematic to get them. Includes things like fixing pre-evolution only moves, updating a few learnset levels to B2W2 tier so you don't wait until level 60 before getting a good STAB, and giving the Dratini line Extremespeed to match the HGSS event. There's also a fair few Move Tutor moves from HGSS thrown in.

It isn't the most dramatic changelog, but Pokemon like Wooper and Natu should be much easier to use this way.

2d Legendary Movepool Changes

Legendary level up moves have been changed significantly to make them into worthwhile fights at the levels they are fought. They still can't hold a candle to even basic trainer AI, but hopefully it's more exciting.
Some of these are approximations, and moot points if you're not importing low-level legends. All of their normal level up moves are still there, these are just shoved into the right place to give them those movepools in their fights.

All movesets are still legal in Gen 4. Yes, this means no Sacred Fire Entei, I'm sorry.
Events are not included as legal move options with the exception of Arceus's Spacial Rend.

Ho-oh, roamers - same level.
Post Dex - level 60, 65 for Suicune and 70 for Lugia

3a WILD ENCOUNTERS
3b Wild Encounters - About
To save space, these are sorted by method, route and then by time. Various values may be omitted because they were unimportant, the Pokemon is found everywhere, or I neglected to mention them.

Like in Refined Platinum, functionally all non-Johto Dex Pokemon are strictly found via post-E4 means. There's also a very diverse selection now in Post-E4 areas (read: Kanto), with a huge amount of Pokemon from other regions dwelling in it. Johto should feel like vanilla with extra seasoning, but Kanto is a whole new ball game, which given how Kanto was in vanilla is arguably a good thing. In vanilla playthroughs, I found myself ignoring much of Kanto due to it having a very similar Pokemon selection as Johto, so I am happily filling the postgame with more Pokemon. My apologies to anyone who was hoping Kanto would be held to the same standards as Johto, I hope you enjoy it anyways.

Individual level changes are not mentioned, though for most intents and purposes the majority of Kanto is now a level 38-50 area (past Victory Road tier). This is meant to make Kanto not a complete breeze to walk through (no trainers are changed since they are already appropriately leveled) and to allow for easier level grinding. As a side effect, many Pokemon are now their evolved forms in Kanto; these changes are generally not listed.

A quick guide:
~+1 (partial) in routes 35-36
+1 in routes 37-39
+2 in Routes 46-48 and 42-44
+3 from Clair to E4

Bell Tower: About 29-32
Whirl Island B2F: About 26-28
Whirl Island B3F: About 34

Route 1-3, 22, Mt. Moon "Pewter Area": about 47, complete with fully evolved starters
Route 6, 7, 8, 5 "Saffron Area": about 37
Route 16, 17, 18 "West Fuchsia Area": about 39
Route 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 "East Fuchsia Area": about 41
Route 4, 9, 10, 24, 25, Rock Tunnel "Cerulean Area": about 43
Route 21, Seafoam Islands "Cinnabar Area": about 45
Cerulean Cave: about 61 to about 70 by B3F
Mt. Silver: about 50-60, with the upper areas being 65-70

If no time is specified, it takes effect all day.
All Pokemon unique to a given area are still there, though Pokemon like Graveler and Golbat may not appear at all in certain areas to make space for new Pokemon.

Sinnoh Radio and Hoenn Radio are always 20% chances, and replace the 10% slots. Since it's easy to change the date and put the radio on, I'm using it for a lot of exotic and Safari Pokemon.
If only one Radio Pokemon is mentioned, it is a 40% chance there.

Various Radio Pokemon in Kanto have been upgraded to their evolved forms - be prepared to see Luxrays and Bronzongs, Hariyamas and Camerupts. These are not listed.

3aX Formerly Kanto-Exclusive
These are Pokemon that are normally Kanto exclusive but have been added to Johto areas. Their evolutions may not be accessible before beating the Elite Four.

Sneasel
Larvitar

4a Event Changes
All event Pokemon are now fully obtainable, and all events aside from the Universe Egg (working on it, not sure how to do it) have been restored. Furthermore, all legendaries are fightable as static encounters. A man in the Frontier Access will give you hints as to where they are hiding.

Most legendaries become available after beating the Elite Four and getting the National Dex. The next set become available AFTER GETTING ROCK CLIMB, which is after beating Blue.
The final set is AFTER GETTING THE BLUE ORB FROM MR. POKEMON, which is after beating Red and getting a Kanto starter from Prof. Oak.

Arceus specifically requires you to have recieved the National Dex Diploma from the Gamefreak employee in Celadon City. This means you must have all Pokémon EXCEPT Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus.
**Recieving the Azure Flute also sets the flags correctly, so you can head straight there.**
To make sure Arceus's flags are set right, talk to an NPC in Celadon who refuses to talk to you before beating Red. This will set the "Creation Trio"+Arceus flags (making them hidden; does not affect the NPCs representing the creation trio) while clearing the Painter sprite flag (making it visible). You may then proceed to beat up the llama of creation.

Post Dex - level 60, 65 for Suicune and 70 for Lugia
Post Blue - level 70, 75 for Regigigas
Post Red - level 80 for Groudon/Kyogre, level 85 for the rest
Arceus is level 95
Roamer levels have not been edited.

PreDex: Entei*, Raikou*, Ho-oh*
PostDex: Regirock/Regice/Registeel, Latios/Latias*, Shaymin, Manaphy, Celebi, Suicune*, Lugia*, Azelf/Uxie/Mesprit
PostBlue: Regigigas, Heatran, Darkrai, Cresselia, Articuno*/Zapdos*/Moltres*, Mewtwo*, Jirachi, Deoxys
PostRed: Kyogre*/Groudon/Rayquaza*, Dialga/Palkia/Giratina, Mew
Diploma: Arceus
* marks a fight available in vanilla.

4b Event Changes List
EVENT SPOILERS:

Ilex Shrine (Celebi): Event is fully intact, you just need a Celebi. Will be required to fight Giovanni again later on.

Ilex Shrine (Spiky-Eared Pichu): Event is fully intact, BUT you now need a Raichu instead of a Pichu. Remember that the Spikey-Eared Pichu cannot be traded nor evolve in any way.

Sinjoh Ruins: Event is currently unavailable. However, using an event Arceus still works. Also, you have to bring Arceus to get another one of the Creation Trio, and you need the Creation Trio to get Arceus. It's basically just a little bonus if you want to see it.

Flower Shop Gracidea: Event is fully intact. After beating Erika, you can fight Shaymin in Celadon; after this, just bring Shaymin to the flower shop.

“Words to the wise: We came. We built.
We sensed and rejected. We left.
The creator still holds dear that which permits his advent.
Past union's depth, a path leading to wisdom and ruin opens.
There, the artisan of the universe seeks your challenge.
Enter the path of the pillar of water,
behind the spiraling, shelled swimmer from before your time.”

5X Item Changes

5aX Evolution Items in the Overworld
5a1 About
HGSS technically provides access to the stones, but only by Pokelathon or phone call gifts. As such, concrete access is being added.
A Dusk Stone and a Shiny Stone can be found post-Radio Tower. Other items, such as the Protector, are not available until post-Lance so as to preserve the original feel of the game. Dusk and Shiny get singled out because while Rhydon and Gligar are strong enough for the Elite Four, Misdreavus and Togetic feel mediocre and are not worth using.
HGSS went out of its way to make sure you didn't have the cross-gen evos where possible; I don't quite agree with that, but I'm not sure if it's my place to override it.

While you will need more than appear here to complete the Pokedex, this makes it much easier to use, say, Growlithe or Misdreavus. Because you can actually evolve one. Feel free to buy the remaining amount for Lombre and whatnot in the postgame.

A * means they appear in the base game. Is not counting the Rock Climb availability outside of Shiny and Dusk.
King's Rocks are actually no longer required for evolution as Slowking is done via Water Stone and Politoed is done via leveling with Rain Dance.

5b4 Legendary Items
Most legendaries now have items to give them a bit more oomph. These are largely offensive items, usually to boost their main STAB or give them their special item.
To the best of my knowledge, Roaming Pokemon will never hold an item, but I'm NOT 100% certain of this.

Latias and Latios probably SHOULD have Soul Dew, but since it's event exclusive at best, nullified in the Battle Frontier and banned basically everywhere, it has been omitted.

Moltres - Wide Lens 100%
Mewtwo - Wise Glasses 100%
